When I was at uni, I discovered the grades my profs gave me on my papers increased when I would explore the ideas I was considering writing about by asking questions during lectures. One day I came into class with a long list of questions about the planned lecture because it was at the heart of my paper. I doubt I asked more than six or seven questions, but some students around me became annoyed and told me to stop asking questions because no one else was. They just wanted to sit there and not participate. Sad to think about and must be depressing as a professor.
