There are natural-born leaders, but most of us develop leadership skills as we go through life and gain experience. Situations arise that test our abilities and we often learn leadership on the fly. Yet, leadership is also a skill we can intentionally develop. As we grow more confident in ourselves, our abilities to influence and guide others grow, and the more we focus on honing these skills, the more effective leaders we become.

Leadership is About Engaging People

Leadership inspires and motivates people. It doesn’t have to be on the historical scale of George Washington or Nelson Mandela. It can come from the woman in the cubicle next to you who people gravitate toward. We impact people in many different ways.

The effectiveness of a business leaders is tied to their ability to get others engaged, which means the US may be staring at a dearth of leadership.

Only 30% of American employees feel engaged, according to the Harvard Business Review. Economists estimate this lack of employee engagement costs the American economy $550 billion annually in terms of productivity loss.
